In times like these, it’s more important than ever to feel connected to your community. At Revel, we’ve been looking for ways to spread kindness and help others, which is why we launched our #GivingIt campaign. This month, our residents and team members joined forces to write more than 400 letters of encouragement to seniors who are facing the COVID-19 crisis and sheltering in place alone. Our goal was to let everyone know that we are in this together and our thoughts and best wishes are with them.
In addition to letter writing, we’ve been sewing face masks to help keep our friends, family and neighbors safe. Collectively, we’ve stitched together over 500 homemade masks! One Revel resident, Victoria, is using her stellar sewing skills and nursing experience to make a big impact. She proudly said, “I’ve been making face masks for every resident. I am a nurse and know how to make these masks. They are two-ply with a filter and very well made. So far, I’ve already made 27 and I’m still at my sewing machine until everyone who needs a mask gets one.”
Giving back to others is an important part of aging well and there are so many wonderful ways to make a difference right now. Whether that’s sharing your stories and talents with others, or volunteering for organizations that matter, here are some of our favorite ways to make an impact.
- FACE MASKS: Break out your sewing machine and help make masks for those in need. Here are some instructions to follow and a list of supplies you’ll need to get started.
- LOCAL LOVE: Looking for the perfect way to help people in your area? Type in your location at justserve.org to see local organizations needing support. We found lots of opportunities for virtual volunteering include writing letters of encouragement to those in need and reading books to kids online.
- MUTUAL AID: We may be apart, but we don’t have to be alone. AARP has found a way to connect people across the country through online mutual aid groups. Find a mutual aid group in your area to stay connected, share ideas, and help those in need.
