It’s never too late to begin a new exercise program. How exactly do you get started? One of our favorite suggestions is to exercise with a friend. Many research studies have shown that people gravitate towards the exercise patterns of those around them and that exercising with a buddy provides increased motivation. Let’s take a look at exactly why that is.
Increased Motivation
In multiple studies it has been found that friends who work out together tend to work out for longer periods of time. In some cases, participants have worked out 200% longer with a buddy than alone. There are a lot of great activities that are low-impact and built for two, many of which can be found in Revel’s on-site fitness studios. The next time you’re seeking a new exercise, give a partner activity a try! Kayaking, paddle boarding, and pickleball are excellent places to start and will give you a chance to spend great time with your friend and exercise partner.
Less Stress Through Quality Time
There will always be mornings when you wake up and the last thing you want to do is exercise. Of course, a workout buddy will keep you accountable, but the quality time you spend together means you’ll have more fun to look forward to with each workout. Doing something difficult with someone you enjoy will not only make the activity less taxing, but it will be a lot more fun. A study in the International Journal of Stress Management also found that people exercising with friends are less stressed before and after their sessions.
Improved Brain Health
One of the big reasons why working out, especially with a buddy, decreases stress is that physical exercise is also beneficial for increased cognitive ability. Physical activity can aid in many different functions that are vital for brain health. Physical activity can:
• Reduce the chance of stroke
• Reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression
• Reduce insulin resistance
• Increase new cell growth
Safety in Numbers
It should always be a goal to avoid injury while exercising. One of the best ways to do that is by working out with a buddy. Not only does this mean you will have someone close by in case of injury, but a partner can point out problems with exercise form which can save you from pain after your workout. For example, your partner can remind you to keep your back straight when you squat, so you’ll spend less time icing your lower back after the session is over.
